　　Step 1 of the USMLE assesses your understanding and mastery of not only important science concepts, but the application of the knowledge to patient-centered care. The integrated exam emphasizes the principles and mechanisms underlying health, disease and modes of therapy. A portion of the questions on the exam will require you to interpret graphic and tabular material and identify normal specimens, gross and microscopic pathologic. Basic science examination content includes:

　　· Anatomy

　　· Behavioral science

　　· Biochemistry

　　· Microbiology

　　· Pathology

　　· Pharmacology

　　· Physiology

　　· Interdisciplinary topics including:

　　o Human development and genetics

　　o Nutrition

　　o Medical ethics and professional behavior

　　Systems and Processes

　　40 to 50% of the systems portion of the Step 1 exam covers general principles and 50 to 60% will test your knowledge of individual organ systems including:

　　· Hematopoietic/lymph reticular

　　· Nervous/special senses

　　· Skin/connective tissue

　　· Musculoskeletal

　　· Respiratory

　　· Cardiovascular

　　· Gastrointestinal

　　· Renal/urinary

　　· Reproductive

　　· Endocrine

　　The process portion of the exam is divided as follows:

　　· Normal structure and function is 30 to 50%

　　· Abnormal processes is 30 to 50%

　　· Principles of therapeutics is 15 to 25%

　　· Psychosocial, cultural, occupational, and environmental considerations is 10 to 20%
