The three Steps of the USMLE are designed to complement the others with no one Step indicating in the assessment of readiness for medical licensure. Step 1 is usually taken at the conclusion of the second year of medical school.
The Step 1 exam is structured to assess basic science knowledge with a strong emphasis on the application of basic science principles in the practice of clinical medicine.
Step 1 Exam Structure
· The one-day exam is computer-based with 322 multiple-choice questions.
o Each question is structured with a statement or question that is followed by three to eleven response options.
o There is only one best answer for each question.
o If you are unsure about an answer, it is better to guess since unanswered questions are automatically counted as wrong answers.
· The 8-hour testing session is divided into 7 one-hour blocks, for a total of seven hours of testing time.
o IMPORTANT: If a one-hour block is finished early, you cannot add the extra time from one block to another. The time is added to your break time.
